What is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherpay (KAP)?

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a cutting-edge treatment that combines the powerful, fast-acting effects of ketamine with psychotherapy to treat conditions like depression, PTSD, anxiety, and trauma, especially when traditional treatments haven’t worked.

How does KAP work?

The Ketamine molecule can activate growth to give new life to neurons in the brain that have started to atrophy. This can increase our brain's neuroplasticity and communication between neurons in our brain, making it easier to create new mental pathways. These new pathways can lead to new beliefs about our life situations and, most importantly, about ourselves as a person.

Are the effects of KAP Permanent?

Yes and no…it depends. Ketamine does NOT fix mental health challenges like anxiety, depression, or PTSD symptoms. The effects (neuroplasticity and improved communication) on the neurons typically last for 30 days, and after that,t without continued use of these new pathways, the neurons will begin to atrophy again.

Ketamine opens a window of opportunity to do the deeper work. If someone capitalizes on this window of opportunity, especially with a bottom-up therapy like EMDR therapy, one can experience long-term and even permanent changes with their perspective on life and themselves…but it takes work.

Who is KAP good for?

If you struggle with anxiety, treatment resistant depression, PTSD, suicidal thoughts, or complex trauma this could be a very helpful resource to get through the trauma causing these symptoms. When our trauma is significant, our mind struggles to surrender control and keeps the “thinking problem” active preventing us from processing the healing. Ketamine can help someone struggling with these symptoms break through the barrier created by trauma so they can achieve deeper healing.

What are my options for KAP?

Providers who offer KAP services tend to fall on a spectrum with one side focusing more on the medical aspects of Ketamine and the other side focusing on the therapeutic benefits of Ketamine.

Remember that the effects of Ketamine only last for about 30 days before the neurons start atrophying, so if there is not a strong emphasis on the therapeutic side with bottom-up therapies like EMDR therapy following KAP services, you might only be buying 30 days of relief. What should I look for with the KAP provider?

There are several factors to consider, but the #1 factor is how much emphasis is placed on the deeper work in therapy after the KAP sessions, assuming you are looking for longer-term or permanent change.

Here are some other things to consider about the provider you choose:

  • Are they trauma-informed (EMDR trained with additional advanced trainings)?

  • Is the environment conducive to KAP?

    • Minimal outside sound

    • Comfortable atmosphere

    • Use of proper music

  • Make sure the person you work with is certified to provide KAP.

    • Must be a licensed therapist or doctor (life coaches are not able to get certified or trained in the United States currently)

    • Mind Free Counseling is TRIP certified for KAP through Dr. Jennifer Montjoy

Is KAP covered by insurance?

Yes and no…it depends. Ketamine is not currently approved for the off-label use of treating mental health by the FDA, which means it is generally not covered by insurance. Esketamine, more commonly known as Spravato, is a nasal spray application that can be covered by insurance.

However, Esketamine is only half of the Ketamine molecule, and as little as 40% of participants experience a dissociative effect. This is important because the dissociative effect is what causes the mind to relax, where people can experience the “oceanic” feeling from within, which leads to deeper healing. There is also a strict protocol that must be followed with Esketamine for 8 weeks (4 weeks 2x/week and an additional 4 weeks 1x/week).

“The journey you’re about to enter is not about escape.
It is about returning—deeply and fully—to the truth that has always lived inside you.

Under the soft unfolding of ketamine, the boundaries begin to blur.
The edges of "me" and "not me" soften,
And in their place arises something vast, gentle, and true:
A felt sense of unity. Of stillness. Of connection.

Here, the mind is invited to rest.
Here, the body can speak.
Here, the soul remembers.

This is not disconnection—it is the great reconnection.
Not forgetting, but remembering what it means to be whole.
What it means to belong—to yourself, to this moment, to all of life.

Let yourself dissolve into the ocean.
Let yourself be held by something larger, wiser, and deeply compassionate.
You are not lost. You are returning.”
